CS2: FUT Coach coolio on Ancient Defeat in EWC 2026 Final Loss to Spirit

Team Spirit beat FUT 3-1 in the Counter-Strike 2 grand final of the Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris, and FUT head coach András “coolio” Fercsák said his side simply ran out of gas after a brutal overtime loss on Ancient. Spirit closed out the series 10-13 on Cache, 16-13 on Anubis, 16-14 on Ancient and 13-5 on Nuke, taking three straight maps after FUT had drawn first blood.

The Ancient Overtime That Broke FUT’s Momentum

FUT led the series 1-0 after Cache before Spirit clawed back on Anubis. The third map, Ancient, went to overtime with FUT’s own pick on the line, and Spirit stole it 16-14. Speaking to HLTV after the match, coolio pinpointed that map as the moment his roster’s composure cracked.

“And I think we ran out of energy, and you could see it on the guys that this Ancient loss was hitting them hard, and we couldn’t really reset mentally, and they just had the momentum, and they just killed us,” coolio said. FUT never recovered, dropping Nuke 13-5 to close out the final without needing a fifth map.

coolio Credits Spirit’s Composure Under Pressure

Asked what separated the two sides, coolio pointed to experience rather than raw skill. “I think they [Spirit] were sharper with communication and reactions, and I think it’s also coming with experience,” he said. “For us, this was the biggest stage, the first time; it’s a totally different environment than playing at home. I think they were just more experienced and calmer in the important situations.”

Despite the loss, the coach was blunt about the scale of the achievement. “Yeah, obviously I’m really proud of them because what we did here is really amazing, and we just changed a player like two months ago, and that they ended up in second place here is something really good,” he told HLTV.

A Turkish Org Built From NAVI Junior’s Old Roster

FUT Esports is a Turkish organization that assembled its current core from the former Natus Vincere Junior roster in August 2025, keeping dem0n, Krabeni, cmtry, dziugss and coolio as coach together as a unit, according to Liquipedia’s team history. The player coolio referenced as a recent change is xfl0ud, who joined on July 7 after FUT benched Laurențiu “lauNX” Țârlea, roughly seven weeks before the Paris final.

That timeline makes FUT’s run to a grand final on home turf for none of the roster’s players, all competing on the Paris stage for the first time as a group, more striking. The team beat MOUZ and FURIA in the playoffs before running into Spirit undefeated in the event.

Spirit’s Second Trophy of the Year

For Spirit, the win marks a second title this year following their triumph at PGL Astana. HLTV reported that the Paris run also let the roster finally snap a six-match losing streak against Vitality, doing so in the quarter-finals on the way to the trophy. The championship also doubled as vindication for Sergey “hally” Shavaev, who had faced scrutiny since returning to the starting five.

Next Stop: BLAST Open Porto Against Legacy

FUT has little time to dwell on the runner-up finish. The team travels next to BLAST Open Porto, where it opens against Legacy, the Brazilian side that finished third at the same Esports World Cup. coolio said he is keeping expectations in check for that matchup.

“I don’t want to set high expectations even though we ended up in second place here,” he said. “I just hope the guys can reset in these few days because it’s not easy, of course.” The Esports World Cup 2026 was itself a first for Paris, relocated from its usual home in Riyadh to the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles for this edition of the Counter-Strike 2 event.
