Valve appears to be laying the groundwork for a free copy of Half-Life: Alyx with every Steam Frame purchase, according to backend code strings unearthed by VR analyst Brad Lynch. Lynch found evidence Valve is actively working on the backend of Steam Frame’s store page, spotting snippets like ‘AccountHardwarePromotions’, ‘HLAlyxPromoButtons’, and ‘Frame Alyx Promo’ that suggest the $60 game will be bundled with the headset as part of a special promotion. Valve has not confirmed the promotion, nor has it announced a price or ship date for the headset itself.

Reaction among prospective buyers has split between relief at getting a proven flagship title and mild disappointment that Valve’s marquee pack-in is a six-year-old game rather than something new:

Lynch, who has tracked Valve’s VR hardware plans closely, posted a screenshot of the relevant strings on X. He wrote that “Valve is setting up the system that gives away of copy of Half-Life Alyx to everyone who purchases a Steam Frame,” adding that the company “did the same thing for those who bought a Valve Index.” Independent outlet VideoCardz corroborated the discovery, reporting that the find comes from Brad Lynch, who located several references tied specifically to the new headset, with strings such as “Frame Alyx Promo” and “HLAlyxPromoButtons” suggesting a dedicated Half-Life: Alyx promotion rather than a general Steam sale.

Valve Already Runs This Playbook on Index

This wouldn’t be new territory for Valve. Half-Life: Alyx is already included with Valve Index hardware, and the current Steam listing states that buyers of the Index headset or controllers receive the game at no extra cost. That arrangement long outlived the game’s original March 2020 launch, and PC Gamer noted that Lynch observed Valve did a similar thing in the past, offering the game for free with purchases of the Index VR headset after the game launched.

Whether the giveaway is generous or simply pragmatic is a fair question. Steam Frame still has no confirmed retail price, and a proven system-seller costs Valve little to hand out if it nudges hesitant buyers toward a headset that otherwise launches without a first-party showcase title.

Can Steam Frame Even Run Alyx Standalone?

The bigger open question is technical, not commercial. Half-Life: Alyx was built for high-end PC hardware, and its compute demands have kept it off Steam Frame’s certified standalone game list so far. PC Gamer flagged that internal branches of Alyx have been regularly updated since early last year, though “the public app is only just now starting to get those many months of staged updates,” per Lynch, who suggested the pattern points toward optimisation work aimed at the new headset, though that link remains unconfirmed.

Road to VR’s reporting frames the promo as one more piece of an otherwise quiet launch runway. Valve hasn’t announced the price or release date of Steam Frame, its first standalone VR headset, even as the company appears to be readying a promo that could bundle in Half-Life: Alyx for free. Valve has previously said the headset is aimed at replacing the Index, and industry trackers have pegged a summer shipping window that closes in late September, with the last regulatory hurdle, FCC equipment authorization, already cleared in late July.
