Meta used its Connect 2026 keynote to confirm that ESPN is bringing a new live sport format to Meta Quest headsets this year, but the rollout starts narrow. Meta said in a blog post that it worked with ESPN to give users “Immersive Sports” with a front-row seat, 8K streaming, and 180-degree views, starting with college football this year on Meta Quest and more sports to come in 2027. No other sport carries a 2026 date under the ESPN arrangement.

The announcement landed alongside Meta’s separate hardware reveal, so some of the early chatter conflated the sports feature with the pricier headset it will eventually anchor. Reaction on social media split between excitement over free college football content and skepticism that anything beyond a single sport will actually ship on schedule:

Immersive Sports Debuts With College Football, Not NBA

Meta’s own account of the deal is the only one on record. ESPN has published no statement of its own about Immersive Sports, so the specification, the timing and the shape of the partnership are all Meta’s account of them, and the 8K figure describes the stream rather than the headset. On existing Quest hardware, an 8K frame spread across 180 degrees covers twice the arc the same frame would cover across 90 degrees, arriving on Meta Quest 3 at panels of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye.

Notably absent from the list is basketball. Meta has announced no NBA games under the ESPN deal, with the only dated commitment being college football on Meta Quest this year. That distinction matters because ESPN and NBC Sports both carry national NBA rights, and VR.org has reported that ESPN and NBC Sports both hold national NBA rights and both appear in Meta’s materials, so the basketball is likely coming through one of them, though Meta has not said which.

Meta VR Glasses Carry the 100-Event Sports Promise to Spring 2027

The bigger sports number Meta advertised at Connect is tied to hardware that does not exist yet. Meta said that once its VR Glasses launch, it will have over 100 immersive live sports events to watch each year from the best seat in the house, thanks to partners at MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC. Those glasses, unveiled the same day, will cost $1,299.99, go on sale in spring 2027, and weigh about 100 grams on the face with a roughly 300-gram compute puck in the pocket.

Deadline’s coverage of the keynote noted the gap between the headline figure and the actual detail on offer. The commitment is less specific than the headline figure suggests, since ESPN is the only partner with any detail attached, and even there Meta has named no games, no dates, no app and no price for the college football coverage arriving on Quest this fall. UFC’s inclusion also raises a licensing question nobody at Meta has answered yet: Paramount bought the US rights to all 43 annual UFC events for $7.7 billion over seven years beginning in 2026, streaming exclusively on Paramount+, and Wednesday’s materials do not say whether an immersive UFC card on VR Glasses sits inside that subscription or outside it.

Apple’s Immersive Video Team Already Shrank After Ten Games

Meta is not the first company to promise courtside VR. Apple has been running a comparable format on Vision Pro since 2024, and the scoreboard so far favors caution over Meta’s triple-digit target. Apple, which has been producing immersive sports for two and a half years, has aired ten live games in that format, and in August it reportedly began shrinking the team that makes them.

Those ten games broke down into two live packages. Through Charter’s Spectrum Front Row, Apple Vision Pro owners watched six Lakers games live in Apple Immersive between January 9 and March 30, 2026, with Charter’s release limiting live viewing in the United States to the Lakers’ regional broadcast territory. The second package came later in the year: four Friday Night Baseball games streamed live in Apple Immersive between August 28 and September 18, an Apple-produced package VR.org had reported on directly.

Meta has run live sport on Quest before college football enters the picture. Meta has carried 52 live NBA games in VR for Quest users, brought the WNBA back for the 2025 season, and streamed UFC events through Xtadium and Horizon Worlds in 2023. What changes with Immersive Sports is the resolution figure and the ESPN branding attached to it, not the underlying habit of putting a camera courtside. Meta has not said which Quest model the new format requires, leaving that detail, like the price of the college football coverage itself, for a later announcement.
