Meta Horizon+ Adds Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition at No Extra Cost

Meta Horizon+ subscribers no longer need a separate Xbox account to sample console games on their headset. Starting July 21, Meta and Microsoft began rolling a Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition into the VR subscription at no added cost, according to an official post on Xbox Wire. The bundle hands eligible subscribers access to more than 50 non-VR games streamed straight to a virtual screen inside Meta Quest.

What the Starter Edition Actually Unlocks

Starting today, eligible Meta Horizon+ subscribers now get a starter edition of XBOX Game Pass where available, offering access to 50+ games, 10 hours of cloud gaming each month, and Rewards for playing. Microsoft’s own announcement lists a mix of genres rather than a token handful of filler titles.

The starter edition Game Pass library is packed with titles ranging from AAA hits to indie favorites, including post-apocalyptic open-world RPGs Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 from Bethesda Softworks; Ghost Town Games’ chaotic co-operative cooking game Overcooked 2; Obsidian Entertainment’s survival game Grounded, where shrunken kids explore an oversized backyard; the brutal multiplayer zombie title DayZ from Bohemia Interactive; co-operative first-person shooter Deep Rock Galactic, where you form a band of dwarven space miners; and truck simulator SnowRunner. That is a heavier lineup than the usual mobile-tier freebie bundles gaming subscriptions tend to lean on.

Ten Hours a Month, Then You Need a Real Console or PC

The catch sits in the fine print rather than the headline. Meta’s own help documentation confirms the limit plainly: you get 10 hours per calendar month of cloud gaming across Quest, Xbox console, PC, and other supported devices. Burn through that and the cloud tap shuts off until the next billing cycle.

There is a workaround, though it requires hardware most Quest owners already have or don’t. You can also download games in the library to your PC or Xbox console and play them as much as you like. Owners of an actual Xbox get an even cleaner path: if you have an Xbox console, you can also use Remote Play in the Xbox app to play on your Meta Quest with no time limit.

Quest Touch Controllers Set to Emulate an Xbox Gamepad

Meta also used the announcement to preview a fix for a long-standing friction point. Until now, playing a flatscreen Xbox title on Quest meant pairing a physical controller over Bluetooth. Road to VR reported that in the coming weeks, Meta also says it’s pushing out Xbox gamepad emulation for Quest’s Touch controllers too. Meta’s blog frames it as removing a barrier entirely: rolling out in the coming weeks, the gamepad emulator maps your Meta Quest Touch controllers to function like an Xbox controller, so you can jump into Game Pass games right away.

Eligibility comes with one restriction worth flagging before anyone gets excited about double-dipping. Meta’s own FAQ states that to be eligible, you need an active Meta Horizon+ subscription and you can’t be an existing Xbox Game Pass subscriber. The perk is aimed at converting new Game Pass users, not rewarding people already paying Microsoft directly.

Second Bundle Deal in Months, Steam Frame Looming

The tie-up is not Meta’s first attempt to make its headsets feel like a full gaming device rather than a niche add-on. The two companies previously co-branded a limited hardware run, and financial outlet BigGo noted the Game Pass Starter bundle mirrors a package that recently landed as a perk for Discord Nitro members. Meta is stacking these console-adjacent perks at a moment when its own VR-native release rate has slowed, and Valve is preparing to ship its Steam Frame headset with local flatscreen streaming built in.

Pricing for the underlying subscription has not moved. Xbox Wire confirmed that a Meta Horizon+ subscription is available for $59.99 USD per year, or $7.99 USD per month. Combined with the existing library, Meta’s own blog puts the total catalogue at 150-plus titles, with new Game Pass additions announced monthly through the Horizon Store.
