WoW: Blizzard Reverts Second Mythic Coiled Altar Nerf After Lockout Issues

Blizzard shipped a fresh nerf to Mythic Coiled Altar this week, then pulled it back within hours after Race to World First guilds began reporting trouble with their raid lockouts. Blizzard nerfed Mythic Coiled Altar once again for the Race to World First guilds, and the nerfs were reverted. Method’s live encounter tracker confirmed the same sequence, noting Blizzard appeared to revert the nerfs it had posted earlier in the day due to issues with lockouts, with no word on whether the boss would be nerfed again later.

It is the second time in a matter of days that Blizzard has retuned the seventh boss of the Venomous Abyss raid specifically for the guilds chasing World First. An earlier hotfix, applied only a day before, had already cut several of the fight’s toughest checks.

Echo, Method and Liquid Stall on Phase Two

Echo, Method and Liquid have spent roughly a day progressing Mythic The Coiled Altar before Blizzard first stepped in with tuning changes aimed at the encounter’s biggest walls. Coverage of the race noted that Phase 2 is very difficult, and Blizzard has now nerfed the encounter in response to how the top three guilds were faring against it.

Five Changes That Went Live, Then Came Off

The RWF-specific nerf that preceded the rollback covered five separate adjustments. Veil of Twilight’s absorb shield was reduced by 20%, Malacrass’s Phase 3 bonus health dropped to 19% from 35%, Zul’jan’s Phase 3 bonus health fell to 156% from 160%, Spiteful Soulcoiler’s health was reduced and Mass Dreadmarch was made to occur less frequently. None of those individual numbers looked dramatic on its own, but stacked together they were meant to soften several pressure points in the same pull.

The August 25 Weekly Reset Already Trimmed the Fight

Coiled Altar had already been touched once before that. On the weekly reset, Blizzard posted a large batch of raid tuning that hit the Lair boss Nymrissa with health and damage cuts, alongside trash spawn reductions and Vashnik, Coiled Altar and Ula’tek fixes across the Venomous Abyss raid. That followed an even earlier hotfix that had gone after the encounter’s Intermission mechanics directly. Two hidden health modifiers that activate at the end of Phase 2, both named Increase Max Health, had inflated Malacrass and Zul’jan’s health pools before the hotfix reduced both by close to 100 percentage points at every difficulty.

Lockout Complaints Compound the Frustration

The tuning churn has landed alongside separate complaints about the fight locking raids out unexpectedly. A thread on the official World of Warcraft forums flagged the problem directly, with the original poster writing that Liquid had the issue happen more than five times on day one, and it was still present on day two. Blizzard has not published a public explanation tying that bug to the reverted nerf, but the timing overlaps with Method’s account of lockout issues forcing the rollback.

For now the fight sits back at its pre-rollback tuning. Method’s own tracker put it plainly: it is currently unknown if Blizzard will nerf the boss again later in the day.
